Supplications while the Imam sits between the two sermons during the Friday prayers are permissible. This due to the probability that the time the preacher sits could be the time in which the Prophet [P.B.U.H] said supplications on Friday are accepted. Regarding the actual time itself the scholars mentioned some 43 different opinions as noted by Ibn Hajr in Fath al-Bari and al-Shawkani in Nayl al-Auwtar and this time falls under one of those 43. Thus, since it is a disputed matter, there is no problem in supplicating during this time.

follow up question…Is it preferred for the attendees of the khutbah to raise their hands when the khateeb makes the dua, or for them to keep their hands down?
In Malaysia, the muadhan usually makes a supplication aloud during this break between the two khutbahs and the members of the congregation raise their hands and say amin.
Yes, and I would like to expand on Sister Maryam’s question. Is it also preferred to wipe oneselves face after completion of the dua?
Following on from Moaz and Maryam:
In the Hanafi school when the Imam makes du’a during the khutbah it is disliked to raise the hands. It’s the opposite in Shafi’i.
However generally in Hanafi, when you make du’a outside of the Friday khutbah you do it with hands raised and wipe the face afterwards.

Br. Mohammed Khan, I am surprised to learn the Hanafi opinion regarding du`a during the khutbah, because what is normally observed in countries where Hanafi school is practiced by the masses is contrary to what you have said. Can you please provide a reference for this? Jazak Allahu khayran.
