here is an interesting question - and one that this author named Nesrine Malik poses in her article in response to this event - http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/ju...

"Is Europe really Islamophobic?

Anger over the killing of the 'martyr of the hijab' is understandable – but are Muslims right to say they are targeted in Europe"

the section I wanted to show was this one -

Yet, these are stones thrown from Arab/Muslim glasshouses and two can play the "what if" game, as Khaled Diab does when he asks: "If a western or local woman were attacked or murdered in a Muslim country for not wearing the headscarf, would her case attract much attention in Egypt or other Muslim countries?" He also mentions prejudice against Copts in Egypt and cites the case of Maher al-Gohary, a Christian convert who has been denied identity by an Egyptian court, as an example of the discrimination against Christian converts. This legitimate argument, however, should not be used to suggest that Muslims hail from a backward civilisation and are thus not deserving of equal rights.

I ask this question as well - if this happened in a Muslim country, would most Muslims care? In my opinion, nope.

“Is Europe really Islamophobic?

Anger over the killing of the 'martyr of the hijab' is understandable – but are Muslims right to say they are targeted in Europe”

the section I wanted to show was this one -

Yet, these are stones thrown from Arab/Muslim glasshouses and two can play the “what if” game, as Khaled Diab does when he asks: “If a western or local woman were attacked or murdered in a Muslim country for not wearing the headscarf, would her case attract much attention in Egypt or other Muslim countries?” He also mentions prejudice against Copts in Egypt and cites the case of Maher al-Gohary, a Christian convert who has been denied identity by an Egyptian court, as an example of the discrimination against Christian converts.
if the murdered had been a muslim, the media would have blared anti-islamic diatribe for weeks. when muslims are angry, the anger is never the news, its the muslims, the state of being muslim or islam that absorbs all attention. that is why islamophobia doesn't parry up with antisemitism in european psyche. i am sure the german bureaucracy was happy to know that the victim was not jewish, and the self-censured media couldn't wait to spinn the story towards more security checks in courts. as if the bugs of racism are as much an anomaly in post 911 EU as the crop circles in the lower rhine. the rise of right-wing parties in england (BNP), Denmark (led by fitna director Greet wilders), Belgium, Norway and Sweden are not misdirected populism as reported by some critics in financially hard times, these are the malfunctions of demon crazy (democracy) too widely represented and too narrowly defined by a few. burqah is thus a symbol of subjugation and the muslim woman needs to be liberated by its old colonial master (france) who had savaged 'her' in search of his 'lebensraum' (living space in german) once and feels obliged to dress her down again. there is no harm in enlightening the heathen, it is the 'birth pangs of democracy', as one king without clothes once exclaimed.
