Salaam Imam Suhaib,

This comment isn't related to this post but I found your answer really helpful and it's one of the most commonly asked question. You answered it in the MeccaOne Video. Maybe you can post this after editing it if you wish. I wrote out the transcript for it:

Question: Why do people still commit sins even though the shaytaan is locked up in the month of Ramadan.

Answer: The hadith of Prophet Muhammad (sw) as related by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (r): "In the month of Ramadan, the gates of paradise are open and the gates of hellfire are closed and the shaytaans (or devils) are chained."

Ibn Hajjar (r) mentions something important in his monumental work, Fatah Baari relating to why we still commit sins in this month even though the devils are chained up: Don't seek your reward except for what you worked and put an effort out for. The Ulema said that the Shaytaan being chained is for those people who are trying to obey Allah (swt). And those people who want to take those steps towards Allah (swt), Allah (swt) who is the lord of Shaytaan, controls him and orders him "leave these believers alone", and makes them (the shayateen) weak so they can't bother these believers.

Some of the scholars said, for ever man is two Adhaans (calls), one is the adhaan which is calling him to Jannah and one which is the Adhaan of Shaytaan. Whoever answers the right Adhaan, then Shaytaan will be weak.

Wallahu 'Alam.

As-salamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu Imam Suhaib, I hope all is well with you and your family and that you are having a fruitful and blessed Ramadan.

No need to post this in the public comments unless you want to. I just wanted to point out that the above article is actually from Al Ahram Weekly, since you don't attribute a source: http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2007/864/sc1.htm.

Also, did you know that Shar'i Perspectives posted the same article the day before on their blog? :-)

When are you coming back to Cairo? We miss you!

Wa-salam,
