“A supplementary study on both male and female undergraduates found that men tend to associate bikini-clad women with first-person action verbs such as I “push,” “handle” and “grab” instead of the third-person forms such as she “pushes,” “handles” and “grabs.” They associated fully clothed women, on the other hand, with the third-person forms, indicating these women were perceived as in control of their own actions. The females who took the test did not show this effect, Fiske said.”

Susan Fiske is a social psychologist, and at the University of Washington in Seattle I also am a student of social psychology. I emailed her about a month ago about this line of research. In the email I asked:

"In the studies you conduct about the objectification of women, have you considered using Muslim women (or
images of Muslim women)?". She responded:

"We have not tried the study you suggest, though our research did interest a number of Muslim Women's Newsletters and blogs".

I thought I would share this with everyone. Although most of the research done in science may make you say "well duhh...", the reason why they investigate these topics is inorder to prove things "scientifically". It also makes me say...that's why we have hijab!!!

“Women should be aware of how they are perceived when wearing provocative clothing, and men shouldn’t let feelings of impersonal sexual longing interfere with their more personal relationships with other women, including female friends.”

I have a better solution:

1- men should lower their gaze
2- women should cover
3- observe the etiquettes (shouldnt be alone, no excessive talk etc..)

And the world will be fine, inshAllah

Women always depersonalize me, it's soo annoying . Just kidding. Subhanallah this is a very interesting study. I wonder how this could relate to the advertising market out there that utilizes scantly dressed women to sell products. The fact that naked women stimulate “Goal-directed responses” may have something to do with product marketing.

It would be interesting to see studies regarding hijab. I think there is a lot of room for research in religion and Islamic specifically.

Duh! Science finding the bleeding obvious. Yet, if you go around mouthing this in public, you'll be considered backward and weird. So much for being a rational society.
