Please note that in the time of Imam Ash-shaaf'ee the word "Sunnah" was choosen to represent what we would call today at-tawheed or al-aqeedah. Note also that Imam Ahmad named his book of Aqeedah "as-sunnah". Ash-shaafe'e, may Allah have Mercy on him said: The view with regards to the Sunnah (aqeedah) that I am upon, and saw upon it those who I saw upon it, the likes of Sufyaan (Aththawree) and maalik and other besides them both, is: Giving confirmation by way of testomony that there is no deity (in existance) worthy of worship save Allah and that Muhammad is the Messener of Allah and that Allah is upon His thrown in His sky, He Draws near to His creation how He wills, and Descends to the lowest sky how He wills......
