Hajj: A Life Altering Journey! Or Is It?

The birth of a new aristocrat heir ensured the union between the self claimed god and his official monks for one more generation, who fooled everyone into believing their pseudo-creed of human god. So superstitious were the masses that the dared not anger the human god or question the religious authorities of the time. Sort of the similar situation in our time where we see a union between many unjust governments and their appointed “Department or Ministry of Awqaaf”.

The heir grew up with utmost care, dealt with unparallel attention; the term “born with silver spoon” didn’t even begin to explain his share of wealth. His life set, course treaded, and all he needed was to replace his father, the high priest of the King Nimrod, after his death and live the life of luxury, compensation, and style like no other in the whole dominion after the king.

Reading the Qur’an by Tariq Ramadan

Source: The New York Times

For Muslims the Koran stands as the Text of reference, the source and the essence of the message transmitted to humanity by the creator. It is the last of a lengthy series of revelations addressed to humans down through history. It is the Word of God — but it is not God. The Koran makes known, reveals and guides: it is a light that responds to the quest for meaning. The Koran is remembrance of all previous messages, those of Noah and Abraham, of Moses and Jesus. Like them, it reminds and instructs our consciousness: life has meaning, facts are signs. It is the Book of all Muslims the world over. But paradoxically, it is not the first book someone seeking to know Islam should read. (A life of the Prophet or any book presenting Islam would be a better introduction.) For it is both extremely simple and deeply complex. The nature of the spiritual, human, historical and social teachings to be drawn from it can be understood at different levels. The Text is one, but its readings are multiple.

Egypt Today Article: Faces “Suhaib Webb” by Farzina Alam

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

William Webb would never have had to hide in the men’s room at a convention, waiting for a gaggle of girls to lose interest. But Imam Suhaib Webb is a different story. Such is the Muslim community’s fascination with this American-born Azhari student that one day he had to do just that. (more…)

Understanding Minority Fiqh [2] al-’Allamah Dr. Bin Bayyah

One of the important legal axioms related to the axiom of ‘ease’ is:

“If there are [scholarly] differences surrounding issues of contention, or issues involving independent judgement [ijtihad]; in the absence of a scholarly rebuke, such differences are excused.”

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful.

Living in the West, identity and knowing who you are is a big aspect, and how we express our identity plays a big role in interaction with others.

We as Muslims living under the pressure that we are can take this aspect to our advantage. Allah doesn’t put forth something without a benefit or wisdom in there, it is up to us whether we firstly recognise this benefit and utilise and bring it about. Many opportunities arise where we miss rewards and chance of gaining Allah’s pleasure, and increasing our eman.

Muslims Gone Wild: Suhaib Webb

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Asalamu alaykum,

I was asked to comment on the hadith of Aiesha [ra], related by al-Bukhari and Muslim, that mentions the singing of songs on ‘Eid day and the “Dancing” of the Ethiopians in the Prophet’s masjid.

A few comments:

Halaqa Notes (2) “Allah is the Light of the Heavens and The Earth”: Br. Suhaib Webb

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The Parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: the Lamp enclosed in Glass: the glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light! Allah doth guide whom He will to His Light: Allah doth set forth Parables for men: and Allah doth know all things.” (24:35)

Recently, before the start of Ramadan I heard an explanation of these verses from Sh. Suhaib Webb which I found very beneficial and inspiring. It also humanized the very transcendent nature of this verse into something practicle that we could not only experience but live in our lives.
