30 Something: Ust. Suhaib Webb

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

The Prophet [may the peace and blessing of Allah] said, “Order your children to pray at seven and hit* them [for not praying] at the age of ten.”

In a recent comparative law class this hadith was addressed by one of our professors. He writes that the order here is not actually for the child, as a child is not Mukalaf (charged with the responsibility to worship), but the order is in fact directed towards the guardian of the child. I pondered on that for some time and thought I would share where my thoughts led me:

The Lost and Found Nation of Qur’an: Ust. Suhaib Webb

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

The Qur’an’s role in developing the right mindset and attitude towards life cannot be underestimated. Unfortunately the Qur’an, for many, has become a book of mere blessings. Let there be no doubt that its blessings cannot be fathomed nor its beauty and aroma captured. However, many have left a real, daily, practical relation with the Book of Allah and, instead, have settled for a mystical relationship whose outcomes are not easily measured nor understood. This is very dangerous and the outcomes of such an attitude have had paralyzing effects:

Review of the Islamist: by Andrew Booso [complete review]

Part One

There was a certain amount of clamor before the actual publication of Ed Husain’s Islamist (London: Penguin, 2007). Moreover, the fact that Penguin considered it worthy of printing and the Sunday Times, I believe, had run two weeks’ worth of extracts certainly made the publication more appealing. The author is a troubled soul, who has gone through cycles of self-discovery, self-criticism and then personal, resultant epiphanies. It is these trials and insights that the author wants to share with us as the wisdom of his life. His essential purpose is to tell the reader that he became, at the age of sixteen, an ‘Islamic fundamentalist’, an ‘Islamist’, a follower of ‘extremism’ and ‘political Islam’ – all of which are synonymous in Husain’s worldview. Then, he saw the error of his ways and became attached again to ‘moderate Islam’. Now he is here to share his story because he feels it is ‘clear’ that ‘Islamist groups pose a threat to this country that we – Muslims and non-Muslims alike – do not yet understand’, and his life shows the ‘appeal of extremist thought, how fanatics penetrate Muslim communities and the truth behind their agenda of subverting the West and moderate Islam’. I think he fails on many counts – and I shall try to analyse why – but he certainly gives us hints, wittingly and unwittingly, that we can take as positive lessons.

The Relationship between Fiqh and Tasawwuf: Sidi Ahmed Zaruq [may Allah have mercy on him]

Friday, May 25th, 2007

Sidi Ahmed Zaruq D. 899 A.H. (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote, “Thus, a legal scholar [faqih] can censure (the actions) of a sufi. But it is not correct for a sufi to check a legal scholar [faqih]. And it is a must that Sufism takes fiqh as its reference (for right and wrong) and it is (acceptable) to rely on fiqh while excluding tasawuf. However, it is not sufficient to rely on tasawuf to the exclusion of fiqh. Nay, it will not be correct without it. Nor is it allowed to rely on it without (being referenced) to fiqh.” Qawa’id al-Tasawuf pg. 15.

Imam Ibn Tammiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) on tolerance

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Sheikh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (1) on tolerance:

“It is not allowed to declare any Muslim an apostate for a sin he committed, or a mistake he made. Such as, an error related to differences surrounding issues of Ijtihad (3) . Allah says in His noble book, “Forgive us our Lord. And to You is the final return.” (4) It is related in the al-Sahih (5): that Allah (may He be exalted) answered this supplication and forgave the believers for any mistakes they committed.

An Ideal Approach Towards Issues of Creed (Where is Allah): Answered By. Sh. Bin Bayyah

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

The Question:

“Is it allowable for one to ask where Allah is? Is Allah (May He be exalted) above His servants? And is that understanding representative of anthropomorphism? Also, what is our position towards those who say that such a question is not permissible and that Allah (swt) is above any place or location?”

Surah : At Talaaq 2-3

Preparing for the exams. Preparing for the examination with Allah

When we have exams, be they at university, college, madrassat, at work etc. there is a certain routine which many of us, myself included, follow. We may not all cram in all our notes at the last minute, some of us might prepare weeks in advance. Nevertheless, when I study at university I tend to ‘learn to forget’, meaning, that I tend to learn what I can in order to sit the exam. How many of us learn to remember? A learning so deep and intense that it impacts our souls, moving us to action.
